The average estate was in decline economically. Writer Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin had written towards the end of the 1870s of minor gentry scattered all over Russia, with nothing to do with themselves, divorced from the stream of life and without a position of leadership. Under serfdom they could subsist, but now they simply sit in their ramshackle estates, waiting to disappear. (Rogger 1983: 90) This situation had changed little by the 1890s. A drought and crop failure in several regions in 1891 caused a famine that lasted into the next year, with cholera and typhus outbreaks claiming thousands of lives.

He stated that he was neither liberal nor conservative, and wished as ‘a free artist’ to oppose ‘lies and violence in all of their forms’. He was against philistinism (poshlost’), stupidity and tyranny, wherever it occurred. He saw these attitudes in individuals from every class and social group and therefore refused to write in a way that made heroes of the younger generation, scientists or writers, or stereotyped other sectors of society such as the police as villains, as other Russian writers did.

N. Asenkova and V. I. Zhivokini, gained fame as performers in vaudeville and Chekhov wrote some of his plays for particular comic actors. Stanislavsky played in many vaudevilles as an amateur actor. He emphasizes the ‘realism’ of Russian vaudeville, in that it was situated in the contemporary social milieu and about ordinary people. The world of vaudeville is a perfectly realistic one but the most unusual incidents occur in it every step of the way … Characters in vaudeville are ordinary and realistic … Their only strangeness is their absolute credulity about everything.
