31 Yet in the same year the Revd George Croly, whose dramatic experience was limited € A devil of a trade' 35 to the unacted tragedy Catiline (1822), was offered a very generous £300 for his comedy Pride Shall Have a Fall (1824). 32 At the upper end of the scale was Thomas Morton, who seems also to have benefited from a 'special contract'. Though he had not written a play of any description for seven years and no comedy for twice that time, his reputation must have been a sufficient guarantee for the exceptional sum of £500 which he was paid for the comedy A School for Grown Children (1827).

Under a 'hit or miss' contract with the normally less generous Haymarket in the sum of £200 for Five Miles Off; or, the Finger Post (1805), Dibdin was delighted to receive from Colman — 'who most liberally and laughingly said he did not scruple breaking an agreement made in his own favour to serve a friend' - an extra £75 on top of the original contract price, which, together with the sale of the copyright at £100, netted him a total of £375. 14 To the casual observer in 1800 the theatre seemed robust and financially secure.

Despite writing more than eighty plays spread over more than thirty years — during which he was house writer for the Olympic (1853—60) and for the Haymarket (1857-70) - he was never wholly dependent upon the drama for his income. He was variously a Cambridge Fellow and tutor, Professor of English in -the University of London, barrister for three years on the northern circuit, art critic on The Times and Graphic, leader writer for the Morning Chronicle and Daily News, and a highly placed civil servant for twenty years with the Board of Health.
